Contactless payments 'increasingly prominent'
8 Apr 2011

Contactless smart cards are becoming increasingly prominent as technology develops, it has been claimed.

An article posted on the Southwark News website stated that following the introduction of chip and PIN, this is the next biggest change within the industry.

"More and more, cards are gaining the ability to make contactless payments," it stated.

One of the benefits of this way of making transactions is that it offers extra security, as the card never leaves a person's hand meaning they are less likely to forget it in a shop.

Furthermore, they will occasionally be required to enter their PIN number so that their identity can be confirmed.

As a result, the article described contactless smart cards as a "step in the right direction".

One organisation that is taking advantage of these developments is Spanish bank La Caixa, as customers can now simply swipe their cards across new automatic teller machines in Barcelona, Sitges and Mallorca to withdraw money.
