Contactless payments 'on the up'
14 Apr 2011
Use of contactless smart cards looks set to increase in the coming years as the technology becomes more and more widely available.
Instead of inputting their PIN number every time they want to make a purchase, individuals are able to simply swipe their cards across a reader.
Writing for Nouse, the University of York's student website, technical director Andrew Fairbairn explained a number of companies have already introduced these changes.
He stated that the likes of Boots, Subway and Tesco have been trialling the technology, while McDonalds wants to install contactless readers in its UK outlets.
These comments reflect those recently made by the Southwark News, which stated that following the introduction of chip and PIN, this is the biggest development the industry has experienced.
Cafe Nero, EAT and Little Chef are some of the other organisations that have rolled out readers in their British branches, Mr Fairbairn pointed out.
