Contactless smart card reader in development for laptops
13 Oct 2010
HID Global and Sony have announced a strategic partnership to roll out contactless smart card readers for the PC market.
The embedded platform is being designed specifically for laptop manufacturers, and will allow for the use of contactless smart cards for a greater number of corporate and consumer services.
It will support Sony's FeliCa contactless smart card technology, as well as other standards and will support external applications using Near Field Communication.
Sony's FeliCa technology is widely used across Asia, with 315 million contactless smart car chips having been used for electronic money services, transportation and in various other sectors.
Customers can use the cards to buy goods and services without the need for cash. HID Global's Trusted Identity Platform will be used to secure the system.
Meanwhile, a new eMoney scheme has been established in Singapore, that will allow residents to use contactless smart cards when paying tickets at a string of car parks across the country.
