Contactless smart card usage 'set to grow'
13 Aug 2009

Companiesandmarkets.com has published a new report on contactless smart cards and it highlights potential areas of growth for the industry over the next few years.

According to the research, usage of contactless smart cards picked up last year and is expected to increase by more than 30 per cent between now and 2012.

Global shipments of the cards surpassed five billion in 2008 and this has been estimated to grow by 11 per cent every 12 months for the next three years.

Dubbed Smart Card Market Forecast to 2012, the study also indicated some of the reasons why interest in the technology remains.

Growing security needs, greater storage and processing capability, and multiple card usage necessitate more widespread availability of the products, it said.

In the UK, sQuidcard's eMoney facility can be used to pay for items in local retailers in Bolton and Dundee.
