Contactless smart cards 'a global development'
10 Jul 2009
Development of contactless smart cards is taking place on a global scale, according to a new industry report.
Companies and Markets has published its analysis 2008 Global Digital Economy - M-Commerce, E-Commerce & E-Payments, addressing trends in mobile, online and contactless payments.
Until recent years, the article claims that regulatory issues have held back development of contactless smart cards for payment purposes.
But it adds: "This is beginning to change as banks and merchants collaborate with mobile operators.
"Applications around contactless cards using near-field communications are also being developed around the world."
With such progress being made, it may be possible for more of the "good applications" reported by Companies and Markets to gain traction as contactless smart card support is improved.
The sQuidcard is one contactless smart card already supported by many retailers in key UK communities.
In Dundee, sQuidcard retailers include sandwich shops and newsagents, along with the city's libraries and Caird Park golf course.
