Contactless smart cards 'a secure technology for healthcare applications'
10 Feb 2010

Healthcare officials would be wise to consider implementing contactless smart card technology as a secure foundation for storing electronic medical records, it has been suggested.

Paul Contino, Chair of the Smart Card Alliance Healthcare Council, says that the group is advocating a health infrastructure based around contactless smart cards and electronic records, which will help to ensure strong security controls.

He adds that paper-based record keeping has now become totally "obsolete" and therefore it is important that every person's medical details are stored securely and accurately.

"It is critical to put an infrastructure in place where we can securely and accurately identify and authenticate every individual that receives health services," Mr Contino states.

The implantation of contactless smart cards has not just been recommended for the healthcare industry - Holly Sacks, Senior Vice-President of Marketing and Corporate Strategy at HID Global recently suggested that the British police force could enjoy quick and secure access to information and criminal records if they implemented the technology.
