Contactless smart cards 'can help bring down fraud'
19 Oct 2009

More widespread usage of contactless smart cards in the US could help the country's payments industry reduce fraud, according to the Smart Card Alliance's Contactless and Mobile Payments Council.

The organisation announced this week that educating people on the benefits of such technology and its potential to bring down fraud will be a top priority in the next 12 months.

Comments from the group came as it announced new officers and steering committee members.

Its member base is made up from card issuers, merchants, financial payment processors, payment brands, terminal vendors, chip vendors, systems integrators/consultants, card manufacturers and personalisation bureaus.

Charles Walton, from INSIDE Contactless, has been named Chairman, while the Vice-Chairman will be Giesecke & Devrient's Ron Pinkus.

Among the new steering committee members were representatives from IBM and VeriFone.

Meanwhile, a report by market research group RNCOS was published earlier this week, predicting that the global shipment of smart cards will grow between 2009 and 2012.
