Contactless smart cards to be used in Cardiff car hire scheme
1 Sep 2010

A contactless smart card is set to be an integral part of a public car hire scheme in Cardiff, it has been revealed.

Ten low-emission vehicles will be available to hire throughout the city centre as part of the £120,000 project, reports walesonline.co.uk.

Cardiff motorists who sign up the programme will be issued with a contactless smart card which unlocks the car.

Members can then release the keys from a storage box inside the car with their provided pin number.

The service will be run provided by City Car Club, which is currently operational in a number of UK cities including London, Bath, Bristol and Edinburgh.

Transport chief Coun Delme Bowen told the news provider: "The car club is another important part of our work to keep Cardiff moving.

"By making vehicles available for hourly rental across the city, we are giving people an alternative to the need for private car ownership."
