Could contactless smart cards help Blackpool Airport?
10 Oct 2011

Contactless smart cards could be a possible solution to the problem of waiting times at Blackpool Airport.

Currently, passengers travelling from the hub have to queue up to pay a £10 travel charge called the Airport Development Fee (ADF), something that is causing many people long delays, the Blackpool Gazette reports.

This is on top of the time they have to wait to check in their luggage and Blackpool Council licensing chairman Councillor Henry Mitchell said the process is inconvenient.

He has encouraged bosses at the Squires Gate hub to come up with new ways of allowing travellers to pay the fee in order to provide better service.

Airport spokesperson Sue Kendrick pointed out that while there are already two kiosks to do this, other methods are being looked into to reduce queues.

One solution could be to give passengers a contactless smart card when they check in their bags, which could then be used to quickly get people through the ADF lane.

This is Gloucestershire recently reported that motorists could soon be using their mobile phones to pay for parking spaces all over the county after successful trials of cashless parking in Gloucester.
