Another council uses Bracknell's smart card technology
23 Sep 2009
The London Borough of Hillingdon has joined a list of local authorities that have started using smart card technology designed by Bracknell Forest Council.
Other councils which use the SmartConnect Card Management System include Bolton Metropolitan Council, Caerphilly County Borough Council and Cambridgeshire County Council, reports the Reading Post.
Bolton's local authority also utilises contactless smart card technology from eCash network sQuidcard.
University of Bolton students and the town's wider community can pay for items in various retailers and restaurants with such cards.
When launched in the higher education establishment earlier this year, IT Director and Project Sponsor Patrick O'Reilly said: "We recognise that sQuid's eMoney solution is a great proposition for our students and staff."
He added that the fact people can check spending patterns online means it is easier for students to budget.
As for the Bracknell Forest Council card, leader of the authority Paul Bettison said that the local government organisation is making money from the scheme by allowing other regions to use the technology.
