Gloucestershire to roll out cashless parking system
26 Sep 2011

Motorists could soon be using their mobile phones to pay for parking spaces across Gloucestershire.

As various innovations taking place across the UK bring the idea of a cashless society closer to reality, local councillors have decided to extend the south-west county's pioneering parking system, This is Gloucestershire reports.

Cashless parking is already in operation in Gloucester, but is set to be rolled out to other areas from next year.

In addition to paying for on-street parking spaces, drivers will be able to renew annual parking permits using their mobiles.

"Paying by phone is great for people who need parking but are not carrying any loose change," local councillor Mark Hawthorne told the news provider.

"When it comes to the permits, it will be great news for residents too."

Residents have complained of parking problems in Gloucester for many years, particularly in busy areas such as Kingsholm - home to the city's rugby stadium.
