New cashless parking system launched in Suffolk
18 Jan 2012
Motorists in Suffolk can now pay for their parking ticket using e-money following the introduction of a new cashless payment system in council-run car parks.
The new RingGo service will be available in car parks operated by St Edmundsbury Borough Council across Bury St Edmunds and Haverhill, offering drivers the chance to pay using their bank card and a mobile phone.
In order to complete the transaction, users can download the RingGo smartphone app, send a text message, make a call or pay via the myRingGo website.
No physical tickets are issued as parking attendants can check if drivers have paid with specially issued mobile phones containing details of cars parked in the area.
A text will be sent when a parking ticket is due to expire and will offer users the chance to top-up their stay by mobile phone.
Councillor Terry Clements, cabinet member for transport, said: "This new way of paying means you don't have to visit the ticket machine or find the correct change.
"It also offers peace of mind about not overstaying, and the convenience of being able to extend your stay if you need to."
Users will be charged a flat rate of 20p in addition to the car park charge.
