6 Dec 2011

school caterer has won a prestigious award for delivering consistently high-quality food for pupils at midday mealtimes.

Darren Cowell from Sunderland's St Anthony's RC School and St Aidan's RC School beat hundreds of people to scoop the School Caterer of the Year award from the National Association of School Business Managers, the Sunderland Echo reports.

He was presented his prize by trustee Tracy Gray, which consisted of a glass trophy and certificate.

Mr Cowell is credited with transforming school meals and helping children to learn more about where food comes from and how to cook nutritious meals.

Among other things, he helped with an initiative called Cooking for University, which prepares sixth-formers to live away from home for the first time.

St Anthony's headteacher Monica Shepherd said: "Staff and students are delighted that Darren has won this national award."

Last month, kitchen manager Gill Vosper was credited with bringing in a four-year healthy eating campaign at Sidmouth C of E Primary School, the Sidmouth Herald reported.
