School dinners in Plymouth win silver award
25 Nov 2011
A school in Plymouth is celebrating after winning a prize for the quality of its midday meals.
Lady Modifords Church of England Primary School in Walkhampton was given a silver award from the Food for Life Partnership after transforming its meals, the Plymouth Herald reports.
Pupils now receive their lunches on real plates instead of plastic trays and enjoy produce from sustainable sources that is organic wherever possible.
Furthermore, there is now a chicken coop in the school's grounds so that youngsters can benefit from fresh eggs and learn about keeping livestock.
Headteacher Gavin Hamilton said: "We are very fortunate to have an excellent and dedicated kitchen manager, Anne Hext-Williams, who is an inspiration to the school."
This follows a bronze award in the same week for Leicestershire County Council's School Food Support Service, which was also found to be producing consistently good meals for children and had brought in chickens.
