Sidmouth school reaps benefits of healthy eating drive
28 Nov 2011
A school in Sidmouth has been reaping the benefits of a four-year healthy eating campaign designed to improve its midday meals.
Kitchen manager at Sidmouth C of E Primary School Gill Vosper brought in new measures to overhaul lunchtimes, culminating in the institution being named a finalist at the Taste of the West awards, the Sidmouth Herald reports.
Children now enjoy nutritionally balanced meals and even occasional treats like home made pizza.
Ms Vosper said she has had excellent feedback from parents, with many now reporting they like broccoli and other vegetables because of the new ways it is being cooked and presented.
Schools that know their pupils are sometimes making unhealthy choices could benefit from introducing cashless catering.
This allows parents to monitor what their youngsters eat online and encourage them to make healthy choices to get a balanced diet.
It should also prevent the issue of lost dinner money.
