Smart card-based Sydney car share schemes a 'success'
21 Oct 2010
A trial of three car share schemes in Sydney which issue members with an access smart card have been deemed a success by the city's mayor.
Residents who join any of the programmes can reserve one of the 190 cars which are located around the city and rent them out on an hourly basis. Members are given a smart card, which acts as a car key, to enter the vehicles.
Around 4,500 residents, including 500 businesses, have signed up to the schemes since their launch, with 180 members joining up each month.
Lord Mayor Clover Moore said: "Research showed about a quarter of car share members have either deferred the purchase of a car or sold a vehicle
"By reducing the number of cars on the roads and the number and length of trips made, car share is helping to ease traffic congestion and reduce air pollution."
Sydney Council is now aiming to expand the programme and triple its membership to around 15,000.
