Sussex children 'opting for school meals despite price rises'
13 Jul 2011
Children at school in Sussex are continuing to eat school dinners, even though there has been an increase in prices, recent data showed.
Figures from the School Food Trust, published in the Argus, revealed school meal uptake across the county has risen.
The national average for primary schools was 44.1 per cent, the data showed, with primaries in Brighton and Hove seeing 35.2 per cent uptake, compared to 34.2 per cent in the previous year.
A spokesperson for Brighton and Hove City Council said that she believed good marketing was to thank for the increased uptake.
"Quite a few parents have been writing in and saying they want to switch to school meals," she told the news provider.
Stephen Jones, headteacher of Ysgol Glan-y-Mor in Camarthenshire, speaking to the BBC recently, explained that cashless catering can make lunchtimes fun for schoolchildren.
He advised implementing the payment solution in schools in order to cut queuing times and make lunchtime more enjoyable.
