West Yorks education facility receives award for school dinners
1 Jul 2011

A West Yorkshire education facility has received recognition for the high standard of school dinners it offers its children.

Haworth Primary School is the only facility in the north of England to receive a 'gold' accolade at the Food for Life Partnership Awards, reports the Bradford Telegraph and Argus.

At least 75 per cent of the school dinners provided to children are freshly prepared, a spokesperson for the awards said.

He added that an impressive 50 per cent of the meals include locally-sourced products, while 30 per cent boost organic produce.

"Working on the Food for Life programme has helped our children to grow up making healthier choices and be fully prepared to embrace the challenges of sustainability in their adult lives," headteacher Janet Parkinson told the newspaper.

Joyce Watson, Labour assembly member for mid and west Wales, recently told the BBC she believes there is a need to introduce cashless catering solutions to schools in order to bring an end to the "stigma" associated with children who receive free school meals.
