York schools set to raise school dinner prices
14 Jul 2011

Parents and guardians in York are set to be affected by a price rise in school dinners this year.

The cost is set to increase to £2.20, which will make them some of the most expensive on offer in the whole region, reports the York Press.

This change will take place in September, at the start of the new term, and will affect 50 of the 67 schools in York.

City of York Council agreed to the rise, which it said is the result of the rising cost of living.

However, Margaret Morrissey, founder of campaign group ParentsOutloud, told the newspaper she believes it is up to the local authority to help people out if they might struggle with the cost of school dinners.

"For parents with more than one child on a limited income, it will probably mean they are not going to get a school lunch and that’s a real concern," she explained.

Elsewhere in Yorkshire, Haworth Primary School recently won a 'gold' recognition at the Food for Life Partnership Awards for its school dinners, the Bradford Telegraph and Argus reported.
