28 Nov 2011

school in Yorkshire has won two awards for the quality of its catering facilities thanks to its focus on nutritious meals and cleanliness.

Stockingate Mill Junior School's team won an Eat Well prize as well as a Scores on the Doors gong from Wakefield Council, the Hemsworth and South Elmsall Express reports.

Head cook Jean Watkins has worked at the school for eight years and said teaching the children to eat healthily is important for later in life.

"Meals are much better these days compared with when I was at school because of the salt and sugar that was in meals," she added.

The cleanliness of the kitchens and food storage areas was praised particularly highly when deciding on the hygiene award recipient.

Earlier this month, Lady Modifords Church of England Primary School in Walkhampton also won a silver award from the Food for Life Partnership for its school meals, the Plymouth Herald reported.
