Croydon motorists set to profit from e-money parking system
8 Dec 2010

Motorists in the London borough of Croydon will soon be able to use a new e-money parking system to pay for their ticket.

From 10th December, drivers can pay for their required fare using their mobile phone and credit or debit card.

Three firms - ParkMobile, PaybyPhone and RingGo - will be offering the new pay-by-phone service, which simply requires users to quote their location and desired parking time.

Councillor Phil Thomas, cabinet member for highways, said: "We think phone parking is useful for providing extra choice for motorists.

"Most people nowadays carry a mobile phone, and, with many people using credit and debit card for purchases, a ready supply of coins for ticket machines is not always to hand."

The service is being trialled over the next 12 months and will be rolled out across the borough if it is a success.

Around half of London's 32 boroughs currently operate a pay-by-phone parking service.
