eMoney system launched in Dumfries and Galloway
11 Mar 2010

An electronic money system has been launched on Dumfries and Galloway's National Entitlement Card (NEC) scheme that will allow users to pay for travel, library and gym memberships via contactless smart cards.

The Scottish council has agreed to a partnership with eMoney provider sQuidcard that will also allow its citizens to pay for small-value items using an NEC.

It is expected that the rollout will be a success, as it follows a similar scheme launched by Dundee Council in September 2008.

Ivor Hyslop, leader of Dumfries and Galloway Council said: "By extending the use of applications on the NEC we are making life easier for the citizens of Dumfries and Galloway."

Sid Bulloch, manager of the NEC programme, added that it is "pleased and happy to support this initiative" following its successful implementation in Dundee.

Dumfries and Galloway is sQuid's third launch zone in the UK, following Bolton and the aforementioned Dundee.

In Bolton, sQuid has partnered with GMPTE and Arriva Buses to offer its contactless smart cards as a means of paying for public transport across the city.
