Era of contactless smart cards 'is a matter of time'
18 Jul 2009
It is "a matter of time" before contactless smart cards become the dominant form of payment, according to an industry representative.
Jemma Smith, head of PR at the Payments Council, predicts that contactless smart cards will combine with mobile technology to "revolutionise" payments in the UK.
"There have been huge advances in mobile technology over the past few years," she points out.
She adds: "We've also seen a number of trials, for instance, involving mobile devices being combined with contactless card technology."
Ms Smith anticipates a future where a cashless society operates with bank accounts, eMoney cards and mobile phones all linked with one another.
It is not only in the areas of mobile and contactless smart card technology that progress is being made towards such a cashless society.
She notes that the Faster Payments Service launched last year has also provided new opportunities for rapid transferrals of money between bank accounts in the UK, helping to support the use of eMoney cards for small transactions.
