Gemalto praises smart card security
29 Jun 2010
Gemalto has praised the longevity of smart card security.
The digital security firm reassured smart card users that the technology will continue to be secure for a long period, regardless of how many times it is used.
Responding to a consumer query on justaskgemalto.com, the firm said: "Smart cards remain secure no matter how long they are used and are designed to work for years."
Information stored on a smart card is kept secure by the in-built computer, which limits access to selected users and encrypts communications with other devices.
Even if the smart card computer fails, the information stored on it remains secure as it can no longer be accessed.
Time is also unlikely to affect security as electronic passports in the US, which include a contactless smart card, are designed to last for ten years.
Gemalto provide payment terminals to UK based company sQuid, the FSA regulated eMoney payment network.
sQuidcard holders can top up their contactless smart card online or in store and use it to quickly and securely pay for goods.
