Google's NFC system 'to involve fingerprint sensors'
3 Aug 2011

The latest move by Google to ensure the security of its Near Field Communication (NFC) mobile payment system looks set to be the introduction of fingerprint sensors.

NXP Semiconductors, AuthenTec and DeviceFidelity have announced that they are working together to create a workable infrastructure for the search engine's Android platform that could be ready as early as next year.

Larry Ciacca, chief executive of AuthenTec, told Forbes there is one thing above all else that must be resolved, explaining: "For the average consumer, knowing that no one can get into their mobile wallet even if something happens to their phone is paramount."

He claimed the fingerprint technology will be the "foundation" of the system, with the firm claiming it will speed up transactions as people must open the app with their finger anyway.

This week, Visa Europe vice-president Lewis Nolan told the Irish Times that contactless payment technology is really beginning to mature in Britain.
