Home Depot 'to deploy contactless payments'
10 Aug 2009

US home improvement retailer Home Depot is now offering customers a smartcard payment purchasing option.

A small embedded chip allows customers to simply wave their card at a checkout to make a purchase.

Home Depot's move to the system is said to be due to a large investment in the technology by international providers, reports CBS News.

The news network says that Home Depot's announcement "will absolutely help keep contactless viable".

A statement released by the retailer says that it "routinely reviews and tests new technology in our stores to make the shopping and checkout experience more convenient for our customers".

Meanwhile in the UK the cashless sQuidcard is extending its service in Dundee.

The card will allow customers to buy low-cost items such as sweets or a newspaper via contactless payment technology and is receiving a positive reception from local people.

One card user told the BBC "It's innovative, it's a new technology, it's brilliant and I'm actually very very proud to say that it's starting here in Dundee."
