Australian airline launches contactless smart card check-in
11 Nov 2010
Australian airline Qantas has launched a new check-in system in Sydney airport which uses contactless technology, it has been revealed.
The firm has extended the programme, which is already available in Perth, to allow travellers from Sydney to check-in quickly and easily with a contactless smart card.
The scheme is available to any of the airline's Qantas Club members and frequent flyers who have been issued with a contactless-enabled Q card.
Q cardholders simply hold the device against the provided readers located near the terminal entrances to automatically book themselves into their flight.
A text message is then sent to the travellers' phones to confirm that the check-in has been successful, with Q cards scanned a final time at the departure gate.
The new system eliminates the need for a boarding pass, although users will still be issued with a small ticket showing their allocated seat number.
