Australian university launches new campus smart card
10 Feb 2011

An Australian university has launched a new campus smart card, according to reports.

The Canberra Times has reported that students at the University of Canberra will now be able to pay for goods and services at on-campus stores by simply tapping that card against the provided readers.

As well as accessing secure buildings, making photocopies and borrowing library books, cardholders can also purchase food, drink and stationary from stores.

Professor Stephen Parker, vice-chancellor at the institution, claimed that there are plans to expand the programme to allow students to use them outside the campus.

''Our partners, Commonwealth Bank, are looking at trialling the technology across the retail sector, so it may be that our students can get further benefits ... We'd like to see public transport incorporated, making life a little easier for everyone," he told the news provider.

The new scheme is part of on-going redevelopments to the University of Canberra, which include the introduction of new high-tech communications hubs.
