Bangkok aims to become cashless society
6 Aug 2010
Bangkok has taken a huge stride towards becoming a cashless society, it has been revealed.
Bangkok Smartcard System (BSS) will implement Vix ERG's MASS cashless payment solution throughout the region after the two firms agreed a partnership deal.
The smart cards will initially be used on transport systems operated by the Bangkok Mass Transit System Company and Bangkok Metro Company.
Officials plan to then expand the scheme to other services and stores if the transit card programme is a success.
"We are excited to be partnering with BSS on this project. The BSS smart card solution has the potential to positively impact not only transportation but the retail, tourism and service industries within Thailand," said Steve Gallagher, Vix ERG's chief executive officer.
The system has been deployed in 11 cities across five countries, including Beijing where it currently processes over nine million daily transactions.
