Cashless parking meters may prevent residents' complaints
9 Dec 2011
Parking meters that use eMoney and contactless smart cards could help to prevent residents from having to complain about broken machines.
Ray Brisbane, a local man in Washington DC, wrote to the Washington Post to point out that many of the location's old meters are in a terrible state of disrepair.
"A remarkable percentage of these machines will not take coins any longer. Many also have broken credit card readers," he commented, pointing out that this makes it hard to park legally.
Furthermore, as the problem sometimes affects entire blocks, Mr Brisbane suggested that something needs to be done.
Washington DC may wish to follow the example of Utah's Salt Lake City, which is to receive cashless machines in 2012.
Because these will not take coins and are linked up centrally, they should need little maintenance and be less vulnerable to breaking down, leaving drivers unable to pay for their spaces.
