Cashless parking meters to be tried in New Jersey
22 Nov 2011
Several streets in New Jersey are to receive cashless parking meters in a bid to increase their convenience for residents and visitors.
According to the Daily Targum, the New Brunswick Parking Authority is currently testing the machines, which will be solar-powered and will use near field communications technology to allow people to pay for parking time with credit or debit cards.
Director of operations for the organisation Robert Garcia said it is hoped they can cut coin dependence by 70 per cent while also reducing the amount of time staff spend collecting money from them.
"It's going to offer more options. People won't have to carry a pocketful of change anymore," he added.
To boost security, the meters will only authorise cards and not store their details.
New Jersey authorities may be hoping the machines work as well as those in Aberdeenshire, as the council there recently told the Kincardineshire Observer its new cashless parking meters are making people's daily lives easier.
