Charity contributes to Canada's cashless society
10 Dec 2009

Last weekend marked the first time ever in Canada that a large charity has allowed consumers to donate using mobile phones, the Toronto Sun reports.

In a move that highlights a way the world is moving towards a cashless society, the Salvation Army began permitting text donations.

By texting HOPE to 45678 from any mobile phone in Canada, people are able to donate C$5 (£2.88).

This type of cashless society appeals to the younger generation, according to the charity's Andrew Burditt.

"Five dollars is probably more than most people put in the kettle so it seems like not a lot but it certainly will be a big help," he added.

Earlier this year, the Independent reported chief executive of Visa Europe Peter Ayliffe's predictions about the future of global payments methods.

He estimated that the world will be a cashless society by 2012 and purchasing items with coins and notes will be a practice consigned to the history books.
