Contactless smart card payments take to the skies
17 Dec 2010
Airline passengers will soon be able to make contactless smart card payments while in the air, it has been revealed.
Technology firm GuestLogix has created a new payment terminal called AVATA-m which will help enable "operators to maximise sales in their onboard stores", as well as at other travel locations such as the departure lounge.
Tom Douramakos, president and chief executive of GuestLogix, expressed his belief that airlines and travel operators can no longer afford to continue to decline payments from foreign travellers.
He said: "As one of the leading transaction processing firms for the travel industry, we have developed the first truly global solution that transcends borders, issuers, currencies and disparate payment platforms, to support the growth of onboard retail sales and revenues for operators everywhere."
A recent report from Amadeus has estimated that airlines could earn around 74.8 billion euros (£63.1 billion) in revenue from non-ticket sales over the next two or three years if they adopt new payment systems.
