Contactless smart card to be used in Indian cycling scheme
9 Jun 2010

reports allindiatoday.com.

Commuters will access bikes across the city using the pre-paid smart cards, while users can ride the bike for up to four hours.

The rental scheme is designed to encourage commuters to travel around the capital in an environmentally-friendly way.

Shravan Vij, writing for the website, claimed that the project has expanded following its initial success with university students.

He said: "The initiative began with the intent to provide convenience to the students but gradually gained popularity amongst other commuters as well."

The scheme was launched on World Environment Day at the Rohini Metro station and has been extended to the stations in Patel Chowk, Pragati Maidan and Indraprastha.

Around 50 to 60 local residents regularly use the scheme each day.
