12 Jan 2010

Contactless smart cards are to be implemented in Yemen as part of a scheme financed by the United Arab Emirates (UAE), it has been reported.

Emirates News Agency has advised that according to Yemeni officials, the project will establish a national identification database that should be up and running in two to three years time.

Arrangements for implementing the biometric system were discussed by Nasser Mohammed al-Mazrouie, who is leading the UAE delegation, and Major General Riyadh al-Qurashi, Undersecretary of the memeni ministry of interior for finance and administration, in the hope that the Yemeni model will benefit from the UAE system that is already in place.

"The smart card will replace all other cards and official documents in [the future] as it will incorporate detailed personal data under one national number for each citizen," the major commented.

According to PC World, smart identity cards can combat the problem of fake identification and fraudulent activity.
