Contactless smart cards to be issued to police in Australia
18 Jan 2010

Contactless smart cards are set to be issued to the Queensland Police Service in Australia.

The force will become the first in the whole of Australia to adopt electronic identification cards to both enhance operation management and strengthen security.

"It is pertinent that their internal systems are also highly safeguarded from threats that could compromise their duty to the public," says Tan Teck Lee, President of Gemalto Asia, the card provider.

He adds that the contactless smart cards will optimise identity management processes within the police force, as well as heighten security.

The solution is hoped to significantly raise the level of identity protection so that security threats such as hacking are lessened.

It was recently suggested by Holly Sacks, Senior Vice-President of Marketing and Corporate Strategy at HID Global, that British police forces could enjoy quick and secure access to information and criminal records if they implemented contactless smart card technology.
