E-money ration cards aim to reduce fraud in India
30 Dec 2010
An Indian state is set to introduce e-money ration cards in a bid to cut down on fraud, according to reports.
Times of India has revealed that the state government in Maharashtra is set to develop the new ration cards to prevent fraudsters using bogus cards to access supplies.
The current set of cards, which are used to open a bank account, obtain utilities and purchase a mobile phone, are often forged and the state government has now stepped in to crack down on this.
Anil Deshmukh, guardian minister for Maharashtra, told the news provider that the new cards will include a photograph of the cardholder and will also feature biometric data such as fingerprints.
The programme is expected to take around 12 months to complete, Mr Deshmukh added.
A similar programme is also set to be launched in the state of Uttar Pradesh in an effort to boost the security of its own ration cards.
