eMoney solutions come to Florida expressways
8 Jun 2010

Motorists in Florida will no longer have to use cash to pay for motorway toll charges following the introduction of eMoney solutions.

The Gratigny Parkway is the first expressway in Florida to go cashless as tolls will now only be collected via the SunPass or toll-by-plate systems.

SunPass users attach a transponder to their windscreen which transmits a radio signal to receivers on toll motorways.

Once a signal is received, the required toll amount is deducted from the customer's account, while customers can simply add credit online or by phone.

Drivers who do not use SunPass will pay for charges using the toll-by-plate system which photographs vehicles as they enter roads and sends customers a bill in the post.

Officials expect the move will improve road safety, as motorists will no longer have to quickly change lanes when approaching toll booths.

All five of the Miami-Dade Expressway Authority roads are expected to be cashless by 2013.
