eMoney solutions could help reduce Australian gamblers losses
7 Sep 2010

A new initiative in Australia designed to limit the losses of gamblers could incorporate eMoney solutions.

Julia Gillard, the Australian Prime Minister, has agreed a deal with independent MP Andrew Wilkie to install smart card readers in every poker machine by 2014 if the Labour party regains power.

Gamblers would be required to set their spending limit before they begin playing, with the smart cards then becoming inactive once this figure has been reached.

The agreement would also restrict withdrawals from cash machines in gambling establishments with poker machines to AD$250 (£150).

Tim Costello, chief executive of Christian relief agency World Vision Australia, dismissed claims the technology would lead to job cuts in casinos.

He told smh.com.au: ''People will still play. As long as it is followed through, a mandatory, compulsory system might even allow me to retire from these issues.''

The southern state of Victoria has already begun rolling out smart card gambling programmes, while Queensland and South Australia are also trialling the technology.
