eMoney solutions help Kenyans save for medical care
31 Aug 2010
Expectant mothers in Kenya can now save towards the cost of medical care with eMoney solutions, it has been reported.
Business website justmeans.com has revealed that women are using the M-PESA mobile money transfer service to top up a prepaid card which can pay for care in a Nairobi hospital.
Cardholders can simply add as much credit to their account as they can afford every month to reduce the cost of medical care at Pumwami Maternity Hospital.
Changamka Microhealth, a medical insurance provider, has introduced the maternity scheme in a bid to encourage more people to pay for insurance.
Currently, only five per cent of the population have medical insurance, with 11 million adults and their dependants without cover.
The move could help save lives, as last years UN State of the World's Children revealed only half of Kenyan women receive antenatal care during their pregnancy, with one in 39 dying during childbirth.
Around 2.3 million Kenyans have registered for the M-PESA scheme following its introduction in March 2007.
