Finnish supermarkets turn to smart card technology
17 Sep 2010

Supermarkets in Finland are slowly adopting smart card payment technology, it has been revealed.

Supermarket group S-Group is planning to install smart card payment terminals throughout its store-network by the end of the year, reports The Helsinki Times.

Rival firms Kesko and Suomen Lahikauppa are also aiming to introduce the technology next year.

Currently, only half of terminals in Finnish supermarkets accept smart cards, meaning many customers still have to sign at the checkout instead of using a chip and PIN device.

Anne Nisen, development manager at the Federation of Finnish Financial Services, revealed many firms will fail to install the technology by the end of the year.

She said: "The specialty shops and smaller concerns have been quick to adopt the new terminals, but the larger chains are behind schedule."

Kesko is currently testing the same smart card terminals in all of its branches.
