Gemalto and Microsoft unveil new integrated smart card security technology
5 Mar 2010

Gemalto, a leader in digital security, has announced that its Provita Strong Authentication Server technology and Microsoft's Identity Manager 2010 are now fully integrated.

The news means that managers wishing to add a further dimension of security to their operations through the use of one time password (OTP) smart card devices need not learn to use a wholly different interface.

Both Microsoft and Gemalto emphasised that the security and convenience of customers was their prime consideration in facilitating the move.

John Chirapurath, the senior director in the Identity and Security Business Group at Microsoft, revealed: "We have worked closely with Gemalto so that organisations using Microsoft solutions to manage network identities have a streamlined way to implement smart card technology."

Most significantly, he said: "It gives our customers the ability to implement strong authentication devices without having to change the way they work day to day."

The Smart card technology provided by Gemalto will be used by Microsoft employees. Embedded in their badges, the technology authenticates attempts to access Microsoft's information systems, making the network more secure.

Smart card technology is in use in a number of industries in many countries across the globe and is increasing in popularity.

In the UK alone it has been adopted by businesses and public-sector organisations in much of the north-west of England, Scotland, London and the Midlands.
