German smart ID cards get security boost
7 Jul 2010

A German digital security firm will provide contactless smart card readers for the country's new ID card scheme.

SCM Microsystems has announced that 700,000 terminals will be deployed across Germany.

Dietmar Wendling, vice president for eGovernment of SCM, claimed the technology will allow users to make quick and secure payments.

He said: "The German electronic ID programme breaks new ground in offering users a secure and easy way to protect their online identities, handle government transactions at both the local and federal level, and access a range of consumer-oriented applications such as ePayments."

Cardholders will be able to use the card to verify their identity both online and in-person and it could reduce bureaucracy levels in the country.

The free IT security kits will also be handed to citizens so they can be assured of the same security at home as they receive in stores.

The scheme will be fully operational from November 1st 2010.
