Handheld reader could encourage contactless smart card adoption
14 Jun 2010

A new electronic handheld reader has been launched that could help proliferate the number of contactless smart card schemes in operation.

Ask, a company that specialises in a range of contactless products, has announced the launch of the HCR318, which is being positioned for transport, reload point-of-sale, ticketing and events transactions.

Designed to be lightweight and ergonomic, the handheld reader allows for contactless payments to be made via a number of different technologies including GPRS, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

The device also comes with 32MB of SRAM and 32MB of Flash memory, while its 128px by 64px LCD screen is backlit for added ease-of-use.

Companies interested in setting up a contactless payment system that utilises the readers will also be able to have the device customised with their own logos and colours.

Ask creates a variety of devices to further the cashless society, including smart cards and tickets. Over 160 million of its products are in circulation across 50 different countries.
