10 Sep 2010
A ration scheme in India is set to incorporate eMoney solutions to ensure recipients are issued with the correct amount of food.
The local government of the state of Haryana is set to launch a trial of a smart card programme to facilitate the Public Distribution System, reports igovernment.in.
Residents in the area who are members of the scheme will be able to use the cards to purchases discounted goods in Fair Price Shops.
Urvashi Gulati, chief secretary of the state, confirmed the smart cards would replace the current paper based system.
He said: "All ration card holders will be given biometric cards on the basis of which ration would be issued. The project aims at better delivery under the Public Distribution System."
Mr Gulati added that homeless individuals will also be able to benefit from the project.
The technology has been rolled out across a small section of the small town of Panchkula and will be expanded through Hayana over the next 18 months.
