Irish university takes step towards becoming a cashless society
21 Oct 2010
An Irish university has taken a significant step towards becoming a cashless society after it confirmed it is to accept debit card payments on campus.
Students at the University College Dublin (UCD) will soon be able to pay for goods sold in the institution's shops and restaurants with a Laser card, reports The University Observer.
Paul Lynam, UCD Student's Union (SU) President, confirmed that the card's would have a cashback facility for any user who spends a minimum of five euros.
He told the news provider: "We're looking at five euros, and that would be on the basis that we don't want students buying a packet of gum on a Laser card.
"I would not be happy with a 10 euro or 12 euro one [limit]."
The introduction of the new emoney facilities follows the launch of a new loyalty card programme at the university.
The UCD SU card gives students the chance to gain rewards and enter prize draws.
