Kenyan healthcare industry set to receive 100,000 more smart cards
2 Mar 2011

A technology firm has announced that it is set to provide healthcare providers in Kenya with 100,000 more smart cards.

On Track Innovations (OTI) will issue the cards to Kenyan company Smart Applications International, which will in turn offer hospitals, pharmacies and general practitioners the technology.

The MediSmart cards will be used by residents to prove their entitlement to health insurance and could help to reduce levels of fraud in the country.

"Implementation of MediSmart and recent data proves that MediSmart is a paramount vehicle in reducing fraud, cutting cost and improving accuracy, ultimately resulting in better service to patients," said Oded Bashan, chairman and chief executive of OTI.

"The continuing success and expansion of MediSmart in Kenya serves as further validation to the effectiveness and comprehensive nature of our healthcare biometric ID solution."

Kenya's Business Daily newspaper recently estimated that fraudulent medical insurance claims cost the industry 40 per cent of its total revenue.
