Millions of smart cards shipped by Gemalto
7 Dec 2009

Contactless smart card shipments from digital security firm Gemalto to the US federal government have now surpassed 25 million.

The cards in question are set to be used for securing the identities of federal government employees and military personnel, as well as for the development of electronic passports for US citizens.

A statement from Gemalto revealed that its government provisions include the next-generation PIV card and the Smart Guardian FIPS USB Key. The former utilises both contact and contactless smart card technology.

Neville Pattinson, Vice-President of Government Affairs at Gemalto North America, said that his company is "honoured" to be associated with the national schemes.

"We have worked diligently to ensure Gemalto's manufacturing, software and services meet the stringent security requirements of the US federal government enabling citizens to obtain secure credentials that are convenient and easy to use," he explained.

Earlier this year, Gemalto indicated that it will be launching innovative environmentally-friendly cards in the new year.
