Multifunctional smartcard technology gets security boost
7 Dec 2010
The security of multifunctional smartcards could be improved following the release of a new microcontroller.
Technology firm NXP Semiconductors has released its SmartMX2 secure microcontroller which can help protect data stored on cards which carry out a number of purposes.
Developers are now producing cards which can be used for mobile transactions, public transport and building access management.
For example, the new German national ID card can be used as a passport for residents travelling across Europe, while it can also be used to make online payments.
Furthermore, residents of Taiwan can use the new Easy Card to pay for fares on public transport, purchase event tickets and as a student ID.
"What the NXP SmartMX2 product brings is the groundbreaking IntegralSecurity architecture, as well as outstanding performance and a smooth path to implementation, to help our customers get to market faster and save both time and cost", said Ruediger Stroh, executive vice president and general manager of identification at NXP Semiconductors.
