New contactless transit card scheme piloted in the Philippines
5 Jan 2011

A new contactless transit card programme has been piloted in the Philippines, according to reports.

Malaya Business Insight has revealed that regional transport agency Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) has trialled the new technology at Roosevelt and Balintawak stations.

The LRTA, which is in charge of operating the Manila Light Rail Transit System (LRT), is also planning to merge the payment networks used on the LRT and the Manila Metro Rail Transit System (MRT) to allow residents to travel seamlessly across the country with a single card.

According to the regional news provider, the LRTA is also aiming to increase passenger numbers over the next 12 months in an effort to boost revenue by 11 per cent in 2011.

"We expect growth in passenger volume next year because of the operations of the Roosevelt station, which will provide seamless connection between LRT 1 and MRT," LRTA administrator Rafael Rodriguez told the news provider.
